FAQ

Have questions? I’ve got answers.

Why should I hire a copy/line editor?

Let’s be real—errors and inconsistencies are distracting, and they pull readers away from the story. But just because something is grammatically correct doesn’t mean changes can’t be made to make an idea or a piece of dialogue clearer, more impactful.

You’ve already invested so much time creating and crafting your story. Why not take this step to make sure the book you’ve poured so much into is ready to be shared?

Truthfully? I excel at what I do. I know it, and my clients know it. That’s why nearly every single one of them is a long-term repeat client. I have a keen eye for detail and consistency, plus a knack for connecting ideas and improving flow and transitions. It doesn’t hurt that I can take on time-sensitive projects, too.

More than that, I care. For my fiction clients, I spend time with their characters and their worlds. I understand them, and I tailor my edits accordingly. For my nonfiction clients, I dive deep into their topics—from tea to real estate to piano tuning—to deliver edits that elevate their writing. And for my (very niche) grad school applicant clients, I love helping them shape their essays so that their passion and authenticity shine.

Like I said, I’m scary good at catching errors and inconsistencies, and all the other things I mentioned above. I also love reading, and I have so much respect for storytellers, who create entire worlds with their pen. Helping you shape your story is an honor and a privilege I don’t take lightly.

Fiction: YA and adult fantasy, mystery (cozy or otherwise), crime/thriller, and pretty much anything with romance. (You’ve written something Stephen King would be envious of? Send it over—so long as it’s got a love interest.)

Nonfiction: educational material. That includes manuals, magazines, blogs, curricula, academic content, and more. I love learning (so much so that I went back to school for an MA), and I love that, through my work, I get to keep learning. Also, to my fellow witches, pagans, psychics, astrologers, and anyone else with a foot in things others may refer to as woo woo: I want to work with you too!

Absolutely not! As I like to tell my clients, it’s your rodeo. The type of copy and line editing (light, medium, heavy) you’re looking for is up to you. One of my clients only wants light combo editing, whereas another is okay with me going to town on their manuscript. It’s all about what you’re looking for. But I will be upfront if I believe heavier edits are needed.

“We are so grateful to have found Sarah! Her attention to detail and efforts on our very niche project instilled a level of trust that made choosing her for future projects a no-brainer. Sarah is extremely meticulous and we felt that she really went out of her way to accommodate us and our timeline. She’s truly a professional! She ensured her edits maintained our voice, which is of the utmost importance to us. One major thing that sets her apart from other editors is her confidence in her edits, which made us confident in her work.”
